Social Media is increasingly present in our projects.
When we create a project plan, we can incorporate into the communications plan the use of certain social platforms to communicate with our team.
As far as I understand, the communication management plan and the stakeholder management, are quite linked, but the first makes use of which tools we will use, and the second in why.
Engaging stakeholders and avoiding turnovers within our team, can be managed or improved by using different social media platforms, but ... Where we should include social media, in communication plan or stakeholder management plan?
Are you using social media to engage your stakeholders during the project? Share your experience. Saving Changes...
We are not using applications like Facebook, Twitter etc. But are using other tools like Watsapp and Slack.
Watsapp - Application support team for any P1, P2 support accross geos.
Slack - We have communities/groups created here for quick discussion on technical topics etc. These are those topics which are more adhoc in nature, where quick turnaround is required.
Confluence/JIRA still used for any formal communication. Saving Changes...
Maria, I am unable to share my experience but professionally /commercially speaking I would prefer to keep social media out of the Stakeholders management plan and project communication plan which should be guided on the basis of contract communication protocol/practice which is generally official communication through letters and or emails( which has recently been accepted legally in many countries). Internal communication within Employer/PMC/Contractor /Sub-contractor can very well make use of social media such as email/WhatsApp or similar media.Hope this helps !
I think that this depend on the company's culture and the stakeholders customer.
sometimes the culture encourage this kind of communication and sometimes it prohibits it but my believe that in the next 5 years it will be incorporated in all corporations if it is not already in most of them.
until today some of the top executives in big companies prefer the regular communication channels and this requires you to push them toward the new ways but at the same time provide them with the other option of regular communication so that they can accomodate
Thank you, Seif for your comments. Years ago I've worked in a company that don't allow certain social media connections, and now they have workplace by facebook. Saving Changes...

Definitely get your stakeholder groups involved for this topic. Especially listen to your sponsor, CIO, key stakeholders and steering committee. Depending on your culture, type of project, organization etc. this may be appropriate but there are plenty of tools for virtual and remote teams that work well for collaboration, document sharing etc.

Great advice! Thank you.
For sure, before to use it, we should define a strategy and plan accord.

Social media became one of the most important tool to communicate the unofficial messages and even the official ones.I'm using social media to communicate with different stakeholders. For example we are using Whatsapp to communicate with the team members and using Twitter to send a messages to the community and end users when we are dealing with public.
But till now we never think to add social media in our communication plan
It is a matter of choice/selection to make extensive or preferential use of Social media as Plan Stakeholders management and /or Communication Plan.Social media is rapidly being widely accepted and preferred by the larger spectrum of Stakeholders. However, with regard to Project stakeholders I would prefer to use it inside of the Organization i.e.Contractor,sub-contractors,vendors,suppliers etc.directly involved on a particular project.Outside the Organization,it would be preferable to restrict use of social media as part of communication plan to deal with the Employer,Project management consultants, and other agencies supporting/assisting the Employer for whom regular official communication channels under the project communication protocol should be ideally used as two way communication between Employer and Contractor. I'd be very cautious about utilizing any social media platform not owned or controlled by my organization. This is based on a few unrelated ideas.
1) I can't rely on my stakeholders to use the social media platform that we choose. Indeed, I can't even count on them to use their company's own intranet tools. Even IF they all have accounts on the same social media service, I can't be sure they'll use it with reliable frequency. Along this same line...
2) I value my work/life balance, and I respect my stakeholders. By using a social media tool for work, I make it harder for them to "clock out."
3) I am at the mercy of the social media platform that we choose. The service can change their policies or their capabilities at any time with no regard to our needs. Not to mention that any information or documents that we share through a 3rd party service could become their property (i.e. Facebook). Speaking of which...
4) My organization has sensitive information that should never be shared. Using a 3rd party internet service without the proper agreements in place (such as NDAs) could expose my organization to unnecessary risk. Saving Changes...
