Hi Friends,

We are hearing lot about OPM3 ( Organizational Project Management Maturity Model). As different SEI versions of CMMs (CMM,CMMI, PCMM) are very popular in IT industry. How you predict future of PMI's OPM3 ? Has anybody worked on OPM3 standards in their organizations/PMO?

Regards,

G'Day all. A very good question. The OPMMM is an excellent tool for organisations who seek to benchmark current performance and plan for excellence in project management. And it is a sensible adaption of the broader SEI CMM framework. In Australia, the OPMMM is the defacto metric for organisational project management maturity. More than twenty organisations currently collaborate in a benchmarking network to compare notes, identify performance issues, discuss best practice, and plan their individual organisational path to PM excellence. If you would like to see a simpe example of how this framework can be used, look at: http://www.cpmgroup.com.au/CPMGModules/Mod.../MainMenu.aspx. (Hint: Just hit the "Register for Free" button on the centre right of the screen). I have attached a file showing the current Australian metrics for PM Maturity. OPMMM has a great future in centre stage for organisational PM improvement.

SUBJECT Understanding OPM3: Advancing Corporate Strategy Through Projects

After years in development, the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3) has been beta tested with dozens of companies seeking to take the principles of applied project management beyond the realm of tactics and into the realm of corporate strategy. Former PMI/OPM3 Program Manager and recognized OPM3 thought leader John Schlicter describes how this organization-wide management system can help companies achieve their strategic objectives through the interdependent relationships of project, program and portfolio management. As the pressures of a customer centric business environment force marketing strategy and corporate strategy to become one and the same, OPM's potential as an operational linchpin between marketing and the rest of the organization makes it one of today's most compelling PM topics.

Dear Navneet, our observations and experiences are very consistent with Mr. Schlichter's summary. As you mentioned, CMM is very popular and has made a significant contribution in the IT sector amongst software developers, contractors, and integrators. PMI's OPM3 delivers and sets a standard that is designed to be easy to understand and use and to accommodate a very wide variety of needs (levels of maturity) of organizations of varying sizes (Fortune 1000, middle-market, governmental organizations, and IT firms). OPM3 provides a framework for knowledge, assessment, and continuous improvement and helps to establish the approach and the link between projects and business strategy. Regarding predicting the future..? Well, there are a number of excellent maturity models and consulting firms out there already, but OPM3 is uniquely positioned and is the PMI standard. The likely result is that OPM3 will become just as commonplace and just as useful for organizations as the PMBOK is for individuals. Cheers. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International
