I'm Masters Degree in Project Management student at the University of Roehampton, Online London. Currently I'm working on Contemporary issues in Project Management. One of the aspects is researching on what toolsets Project Managers across the world have been familiar with and have been most useful to them in practice. There could be no better place to get the head-ups on this kind of topic than at PMI Network. That's why I'm here. If you have any idea or experience on the topic, my kindly share with me.

What is a tool? You will find that it could be from a device to an ability. So, my recommendation if you are working into your tessis, is taking into account to give a clear defintion of the terms you are looking for. Are you asking for software tools? Are you asking for any other type of tools?
Simon, I agree to what Sergio said, the first thing to do is to define what Tool is. I can categorize them into Physical/Technical(People, equipments, Materials/Softwares) and Non Technical (Management Tools goes with techniques, they include standards like PMBOK5), of course you will agree with me that neither Non Technical tools nor Technical tool can manage project on there own. I included people as a tool , because it depends on your definition. During most of my complex projects I have observed that involving/managing subject matter experts served as critical tool for a safe landing of those projects , it is just like driving miles with a mechanic in the vehicle , this time the mechanic is a tool.

Thank you for contribution, which is so highly appreciated. Talking about people as tools, I will be interested in virtual team in the context of Global Project. And I would like to know more from you. Have you used virtual teams to deliver any of your project? How useful effective could a virtual team be and what is the ease of managing them?

Interesting set of answers, all valid
I think the size of the project and the industry may change the choice of softwares toolset .
For knowledge tool it is more standard in my opinion.
You may use the survey for more specific question.
