A project manager's toolset consists of invariably a few standard tools-
1. Project Plan software MS-PROJECT or excel template can also do.
2. MS Visio
3. Share Point, Lotus notes for managing project documentation
4. Oulook offcourse for emails and calender
5. Instant messaging, skype or whatever appropriate
6. Power point templates for team to use for their presentations

What is a tool? You will find that it could be from a device to an ability. So, my recommendation if you are working into your tessis, is taking into account to give a clear defintion of the terms you are looking for. Are you asking for software tools? Are you asking for any other type of tools?

Simon, I agree to what Sergio said, the first thing to do is to define what Tool is. I can categorize them into Physical/Technical(People, equipments, Materials/Softwares) and Non Technical (Management Tools goes with techniques, they include standards like PMBOK5), of course you will agree with me that neither Non Technical tools nor Technical tool can manage project on there own. I included people as a tool , because it depends on your definition. During most of my complex projects I have observed that involving/managing subject matter experts served as critical tool for a safe landing of those projects , it is just like driving miles with a mechanic in the vehicle , this time the mechanic is a tool.

A survey may work better here with options to better formulate a roll up of the results. My assumption is we are talking from a software perspective. It would also be interesting to see how various tools are integrated and utilized in conjunction with one another - like MS Project and SharePoint, Mindjet and Word, SharePoint and BI.
