Companies looking for project or program managers have widely differing requirements when it comes to years of experience attached to the "Senior PM" title. What do you think? Is there an absolute minimum?

All depends on the company, from my point of view should be a combination years of experience + size of the project. And the hiring managers should include in the role description the experience that they are expecting.

I've just received an email from a recruiter asking for a SAP HANA Senior Project manager with more than 10 years experience in HANA. Only for your info SAP HANA was launched on 2011. Then...sometimes this "seniority" will lose sense with this kind of role descriptions.

I agree with the comments listed above, it must be a formula of years of experience, education and certifications, project size and complexity and excellent written/verbal and communication skills. Trust is a huge factor also. The Senior Title should be earned and vetted, not only meeting what is required in the job description but someone who emboides the mission, values and vision of the company and who is strategically agile. Someone who can be a change champion.

it depends on area of expertise, experience, skills and degree/certifications as well, though +/- 10 should be ok. industry wise may minorily differ.

I concur with everyone who said you must read the job description carefully.

"Senior PM" could mean they're looking for a software developer who also makes good coffee. The job title "project manager" is often misunderstood and sometimes abused. When an organization interviews you to see if you're the right person for the job, you must also make an effort to interview them and make sure the job is the right position for you.
