Question about ServiceNow as a Project Management tool.
Dave DavisSenior Project Manager| Cincinnati Children's HospitalSpringboro, Oh., United States
Does anybody have experience on using ServiceNow as the project management tool to support their PMO (or projects in general). I am in an IT group that is fairly strong on ITIL Processes and uses ServiceNow quite heavily, I also believe we should try and keep our data in one place and am exploring building our processes around the ServiceNow tool. I'm interested in lessons learned, pros or cons of the tool, how your group might use it, etc. Please respond to this post or email me: [email protected]. Saving Changes...

hi David
As far as I know, some good companies(mid-large) are using service now as a PM tool. I don't have first-hand experience using as a PM tool, except for tickets, but I heard good reviews on using service now for PM'ing. Saving Changes...
Our client has just implemented ServiceNow, but this is restricted only to manage incidents and tickets. But I would like to see comments from PM community if this tool can be extended for PMO activities as well. Saving Changes...

The ServiceNow PPM can be a good tool if you have a Portfolio approach to manage the IT Projects. This integrates well with Demand Management and allows the project to be managed in both traditional projects as well as Agile / Scrum (depending on the nature of the work one could prefer either one).
I can help with details if required or give a demo if that helps make a decision. Saving Changes...

Hi David: Our large national corporation used Service Now for their PM tool, but moved to a customized version of Microsoft Project that includes Resource Management and Financial Management. It was hard to move to many project managers and resources over to this product, but it has so much fantastic functionality! Saving Changes...

Hi David - We are implementing the tool now, the target deployment date is July 2018.It looks great as far as a demand management and portfolio management tool but I am not fully confident about its ability to be an all inclusive project management tool especially if the intent is to solely use the tool. However, it appears the tool is very configurable and maybe we just haven't fully utilized the features.
The Pros: it is a very intuitive tool, it can support waterfall/Agile/Hybrid, there is a nice Kanban feature that allows project teams to report their own progress. The status reporting feature is great and I think Sr. Management will love the transparency the tool provides.
The Cons: I work in the government so we have a tendency to like documentation, I am not sure how electronic records will be received by our stakeholders (although you can attach electronic documents). You can't link Risks to Issues. There isn't a way to link stakeholder needs to requirements, and there is no Traceability Matrix.

Hi Destiny,
I'd be curious to hear if you have any lessons learned either about the PPM implementation process or how the ServiceNow tool is working for you now that you've been using it for a while.

Based on my experience, I would not use it if you have other natural-born PM solutions available.
Yes, there maybe some integration with your PM solutoin i.e. change management Saving Changes...
