I was reading the PMP guidebook and one of the requirements for the
certification was the "4500 hours of project management" experience.
What does it mean by this? Do I have to be working on as project
manager for 4500 hours before I could apply for the certification? I
am a software conslutant but never worked as a project manager in any
of the projects. So, does this mean that I have to work as a project
manager before I could be a PMP? Is there any other way I can meet
this requirement? thank you for your reply.
You don't have to have worked as a project manager. The main thing that the PMI wants to know is that you have been involved in project management in one way of another. For example, if you have been involved in creating plans, creating status reports, defining and estimating work and so, you're good to go. So you can still qualify for the 4500 even if you've worked as a project team member...just as long as you have taken an active role in intiating, planning, executing, controlling, amd closing the project. If you have the PMBOK, take a look at the all the various project management activities and try to map your experience to the PMBOK activities to come up with your 4500 hours. Saving Changes...
It is really nice of you to throw some light on the 4500hr issue, but i have a query related to the same. While filling up the form it states that an Audit of the experience may be carried out.3 yrs back i worked as a maintenance engineer and during the same time i executed projects. Now i work as a project engineer. If i have to produce 4500 hrs of experience how do i document the same and in case of an Audit how do i provide the required experince proof.
Kindly advice on the same
