Emotional intelligence is key competency of leadership and a competency in the PMI Triangle Have you ever tested yourself to gauge your strength in this area? Here is quick quick quiz you can take; come back over to chat about your results. https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/ei-quiz.htm Saving Changes...
Naomi, did you think about to post it in a poll to collect the participation?
Mayte:
Let's just keep the discussion going; I'll be speaking on this topic right here at ITPMXPO in April. We'll get a poll going at that time. Cheers!
There is always room for improvement - I will try to avoid taking things personal when it is work related. How about you Naomi ?
Rami:
Certainly you have to stay focused, keep things in perspective, listen for messages, ask clarifying questions, and read body language. I can identify issues before many people begin speaking. As far as taking things personally, as a PM it's best to focus on your role, targets, results and outcomes and value. Make sure you are always leading; your team and organization depends on it.
How do you practice EQ and get feedback?

This all comes with experience Naomi ... Experience is the best teacher of all times especially when it comes to EQ.

Good score; were you surprised? A little room for improvement which is another topic.
Let me start another discussion on this personal growth and development and SWOT Analysis. Personally, I've used a form of these templates and have downloaded these to use for coaching project managers.

Thank you for sharing the quiz. I love the breakdown of the scores into the categories of self Awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. My score was 66 and the breakdown helps to identify where there is still room for improvement.
This was great.

Your welcome; it's good to have more leadership discussion here since it's the third tenet of the PMI Triangle.

Experience is great but we can all learn emotional intelligence. We learn more from our experience if we are really mindful and mine each experience for the lessons to be learned.
Some people experience the same things over and over again and seem not to learn anything!

In this case, I'm with Ruth...from my point of view is EI something that we can learn and improve.

I am not sure EI can be learned. It really depends on a person's mindset. If it is a fixed mindset they may never learn and keep repeating the same experiences/lessons over and over again as Ruth has suggested. But, if a person has a growth mindset, they are open to changing and learning new things, as well as, learning from their experiences.

Demetrius:
You must be in the right mindset to be open to learning in order to grow, change and transform.
Rami:
I'm not sure experience is the best teacher if you continue to repeat the same mistakes and don't learn from them. Also, you may have to use different behaviors in different situations with different people and in different cultures so practice, feedback, training and support from a mentor, coach and sponsor is important.
Ruth:
Agree, and you've posted some great information here for the community!
