Where to start?

I am a new project manager and am wondering how to begin a new project? Is there a boilerplate template that will help me to understand how to start, i.e. what steps are most important, their chronology, etc.?

Would greatly appreciate any help.

Why not start by reading through the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)? You can get a copy of the 2000 edition (i think) at the PMI site (www.pmi.org).
