If you are running a PMO, there are a number of variables that come into play in terms of being able to have sufficient staffing. Companies culture, CMM status, individual PM skills (soft, technical, and methodology), size of projects, number of team members and stakeholders, etc... all influence any calculations - but are there any rule of thumbs that can be applied. Dear Anonymous, this is an excellent question and you clearly have command of all of the issues and parameters. Typically, we see that a PM in an average PMO handles between 5 to 10 projects of varying sizes. I suspect this number, though an observation, is meaningless. Many PMOs maintain a targeted number of projects per PM that can be assigned in general as well as balancing parameters, such as 1 mega-project and 5 or 6 smaller projects per PM.
