What is the most common conflict of interest that you’ve encountered as a project management professional? If you’ve not encountered one that you know of, what do you think is the most common? Saving Changes...

Hi Theodore,
This is a very important question. There was a recent discussion thread on the same exact subject - You might want to check it out as it contains valuable feedback from our fellow colleagues: https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussi...erest-situation
The most common Conflict of Interest I've encountered is the involvements of relatives or friends in projects be it as third party or as team members.

Hello Theodore ,
This question has again resurfaced although as pointed out by Rami this has already been answered in quite detail at : https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussi...erest-situation According to me the most common conflict of interest is being part of both teams and having your own hidden intrest in the project. The most common conflict I’ve encountered involves Stakeholders with selfish interests they try to pursue, though doing so will severely harm the project or even the entire organization.

I agree that hidden agenda and selfish interest are major source of conflict of interest.

Functional managers might counter that I'm the one with the conflict of interest. Their responsibility to the organization is to oversee their departments and keep the business running smoothly, but all I seem to care about is this silly project.

Wade:
Interesting point of view; PMs have in an interesting role in matrix and projectized environments where you perform the same function as many functional managers except signing time-sheets and performance reviews.

Functional manager and projet manager don't have same objectives. A simplified view could be that
PM should concentrate on delivering projects,
FM should develop their teams, lending people to project and prepare them for futur need of the organisation.
Conflicting objectives at time!

Hi Vincent,
I agree with you that new discussions even on old subject are always good and attracts different people with different opinions. I never mentioned otherwise !
I referred Theodore to that discussion because it is very recent and as you said different opinions so he might find some valuable feedback there besides here.
