Discussing Project Sustainability as major concern for many developing countries.

For projects to be sustainable, there must be impacted by the ECONOMIC, SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL factors. In recent years, most funding bodies don't only focused on the fundings to be invested, but rather they have been expressing concerns on the sustainability of projects.

According to a report submited to one organisation, it was stated that "project sustainability is a major challenge in many developing countries. Large number of projects implemented at huge costs often tend to experience difficulties with sustainability". Meaning, these countries incurred huge expenditures to implement projects, and at the end are faced with poor sustainability which at some point might deprived them from the returns expected of these investments. Also they might experience an increased in debts for development expenditure, with the gains from these expenditure been accrued at a lower rate.

The question is given the rising number of projects being executed in developing countries especially Africa, how do we go about implementing a sustainable projects?. Is it the responsibility of the Project Manager or the Organisation to keep track on those core factors for sustainability?

This is a very important subject and I agree with you that many organizations spend too much money on jobs that end up with poor sustainability.

The responsibility for this lies mainly within the organization itself. The organization should be committed to executing sustainable projects and this will have to be built in their budgets because it will definitely cost more to achieve a sustainable building (On the short run).

The organization which is working on it is GPM. See the website. They have a certification too. The company where I am working today is fully compromised with that. All our projects and programs take care on it.

While a PM can try to incorporate sustainability into their PM approach, a true commitment to sustainability needs to be part of the DNA of an organization for it to influence portfolio decisions about which projects to invest in and how to deliver those projects.

I would consider it to be similar to quality, diversity or many other mindset shifts which need to be part of the culture of a company for it to be (no pun intended) sustainable.
