Top action item on my development plan is negotiation skills, as I have a major need for improvement in this area.....can any of you give recommendations for material (books, audios, seminars...) to shape up in this area?

Definitely take course; it helps to learn and apply it in class. Also, find a mentor to pair up with to work on after your class. Great goal Kathrin.

I agree with Aaron. These books have some great gems which could assist you. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In; Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High; but I would add this book as well - Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most.

There are some great recommendations here. I noticed Harvard Business Extension has a new online negotiation masterclass for professionals for around $1500 (40 hrs. 8 weeks certificate if memory serves me correctly).

Here is the direct link with more details:

Thank you so much for all of these resources plus the additional tips and recommendations....
You are totally right that reading about it can only be one building block, and getting it out of the manuals and into real-life application is key to success. I also realize that patience and having my emotions in check are on my to-do list.
So now -“the ball is in my field“, as we say in German.

'Getting More' by Stuart Diamond is an excellent read which will give you insights in art of negotiation. Taking care of emotions and perception management whom you negotiate with are two key aspects and how to come out of them as win win, that requires perseverance, problem solving approach combined with interpersonal skills.
Dharmendra, thanks for pointing out the emotions aspect here, that is a big one for me. 'Getting more' will be my starting point .....

Are you negotiating with people from different countries and cultures? If so, then Geert Hofstede's research about cultural dimensions is invaluable.
