Hello all,
I have moved to the US from Russia 6 years ago and had to start everything from the scratch. I got my PMP certification but having trouble finding a project management position due to the lack of experience. I would love to hear your success stories and what have you started with on your way to becoming a project manager. I am currently holding an entry level management position with Verizon but unfortunately, there are little to no project related experience. I was looking at the volunteering activities as well but not sure where to start with. All and any advice would be appreciated.

Get involved with local PMI chapter in your region for volunteering activities/opportunities, if learning is what you aim at this point.

Thank you for your advice. Even though I have about 3 years of project experience from Russia and my PMP certification is seems impossible to find a job. I would be willing to do volunteering work as long as it will help me to get where I want to be.

Actually, certification gives you the edge, project experience comes only by getting involved. Agreed, opportunities are less.

I think getting connected should also include referring or recommending someone for an opportunity or at least posting any open position one may come across.

I held a project management position back in 2011 prior to my move to US. I was mainly working on small internal projects (software implementation, office space expantion etc) I am currently with VZ social media team on a FIOS side as a Sr coordinator, mainly overseeing CSAs, monitoring the feed for social media. In between these roles i have been doing tech support and got a degree in that field as well. I have tried to search keywords becoming a project manager, new PM but was not able to find much information. If you could point me to the right direction that would be great.

I looked at your resume and I see the problem. Most employers want to see 'Project Manager' as your most recent job title before they'll consider hiring you, but the last Project Manager position you held was four positions ago, back in 2011. Volunteering would enable you to add a new Project Manager position on your resume, and that might be all you need to do to get the full time job you want.
In addition to PMI.org's volunteer opportunities, check out VolunterMatch.org. I did a search on virtual Project Manager positions, and found quite a few:

Thank you so much, it is very helpful. I will start looking at it right now. I was lost and didn't know what to start with as with my move to a different side of the world I had to start back from the bottom and it is not moving as fast as I was hoping for. Could I also ask you another question, besides the experience is there anything else you see on my resume that has to be changed or that would prevent me from being considered?

Thank you, I will start reading the thread now. Naomi, could you also suggest the best way to look for a mentor? Would it be through my local chapter or I can find one here? Thanks again for your advice
