Communicate well. So much time and money can be wasted on a project due to lack of communication. Lack of communication also causes widespread dissatisfaction and resentment, and can lead to good people leaving an organization.

Since Eric mentioned communication, I will go with 'Transparency'. It encompasses communication, also including exposure, which in turn, will lead to a project where all will have a clear window into the current status and upcoming expectations, or potential curves in the road. It's not a birthday party, so let's avoid surprises :)

You can't narrow it down to "one thing." It's not that easy.

Look at technology. There isn't "one thing" that makes the internet work. To the contrary, there are many things that make it work, and if one of those things fails, you lose internet service. That's why your company hires so many people to keep your network running and your website online.

Projects aren't accomplished by machines, of course; project teams are made of people, and people are far more complex and moody than machines. So imagine everything it takes to keep a complex network of machines running, and cube it. That's what it takes to make a project successful.

Clarelly define the meassures to consider successful the project where I am asigned. You can find lot of projects with the incorrect meassures so they are considered unsucceful when it is not right.

Communication and Integration Management(knowledge area in PMBoK).

Communication (and Negotiation) is definitely very important for project success. Along with it, I do consider Integration Management knowledge area which consists of important processes from initiating to closing of a project and unless every task is integrated correctly, a project cannot be a success!

Value/Benefit of the project and its final product. Everyone involved in the project must:
- Understand the value the project will deliver. This helps to plan effectively, prevent scope creep...
- Plan and ensure the value is gradually deliver throughout the entire project. This helps to plan effectively, prevent risks, prevent scope creep, detect/react/adapt to changes and issues promptly...
- See his contribution to it and be recognized and rewarded accordingly. This helps to motivate individuals and teams
