I think that people above me are starting to understand that when they ask for a "status report" they really want something different than what the typical PM is used to compiling.

Does anyone have an executive level/dashboard type of report template that they could share with me before I reinvent the wheel?

The bottom line with executive management is they expect you to digest the info and present it in an easy to assimilate presentation. I am a big fan of "green-yellow-red light" reporting. In seconds you know where your problem areas are.

The problem with most dashboard reports is that they summarize information at the level of the project manager. The most effective dashboards take into account the critical success factors (CSF) of the executive sponsors, and show the status of the project from their perspective.

To accomplish this, requires some work on the project plan. You need to identify which tasks are part of accomplishing the CSF's. Then show the dashboard in terms of CSF's. It will give you a whole new view of what's really important in your project, and your executive sponsors will see that you're actually focusing on what they see as important.
