Is it a single activity?
Is it a series of activities?
Is in time-bounded?
Is it done once?
Is it done several times during a project?
Is it a must?

Do you perform team building in your projects?

Do you need management approval for team buildings?

Direct translation sorry!

Yes, you got is. From my point of view, team building is not only when we spent money in team activities as ziplines, dinner or water parks, is also how we interact with our group in order to create a team.

In my case, as a freelance, when I joined a company, I didn't have a team, I manage a group of people, and I have to work to create a team, a real team.
Good comments...

Based on experience, initiating "periodic" and varied team building activities can achieve many positive things such as--break down communication gaps/bridges due to diversity to culture, race, personality differences; negative competition among members; foster camaraderie, team spirit/harmony. It helps nurture long term relationships.

When you set a team building activity, you must have a specific goal/objective in mind to make your team building activity effective.

Team building is a way of "bonding" with your colleagues. It must be enjoyable and relaxing. Not competitive. It encourages motivation and builds successful teams.

Examples of team building activities: breakfast or lunch get together; sports activities; a weekend retreat, a potluck, go to a karaoke bar and sing to our hearts desire, a game activity in the office, etc. Be creative. It depends on what you want to achieve.

Team building activities need not always be expensive and extravagant.
One of my former bosses would cook/bake for us twice a month and if not possible, one would volunteer to do it. It became a routine for the team and everyone would always look forward to it. We were like a big family. The continuous team bonding boosted our morale and productivity. It helped build trust and respect. Everyone was uplifting each other. The support system was amazing.
We would also have coffee/tea and cookies while we do brainstorming and everyone was participative.

The demands of work can be very stressful. As the cliche goes, "all work, no play can make Jack a dull boy."

On going moral boosting session for the team not only in terms of the work they are doing, the activities can be anything which improves an individual and ultimately directly or indirectly benefits the project.

Team building includes every touch point. Similar to those who suggest “Customer Experience” over “Customer Service” because the former proposes that every touch point contributes to your impression, the same is true here.

Team building involves every touch point a team member might consider. How am I treated by the boss? Other members of the team? How do we treat one another? Are we happy, more productive? The list goes on.

Every touch point matters. Team building is unbounded. A must? Only if you with greater success with greater ease (see author Daniel Pink or Robert Greenleaf on Servant Leadership) :)

Team building is an interesting subject which is often talked, discussed around the table, planned on paper and hyped to level of sky in most of organizations but rarely channelized to meet the level of expectations.

In my opinion, it is a continuous cycle with scope of lot of iterations by managing the expectations of team members along with conflicts under highly motivated environment by passing the ownership to each of the participating individuals.
