This is just a extra certification that will make you saleable in open market and yes, its good for job hopping. It does not guarantee to be good PM , I have seen everyone getting this certification for jumping to another job or getting into PM stream although they do not have enough experience also. I feel that the PMP cert does not reflect an individual's ability to PM a project. It simply represents that someone has studied the PMBOK and is able to apply it in day to day scenarios within IT PM.
Similiar to a university degree, it gives a good understanding for an employer / corporation to understand what type of individual they're getting during the tendering process. As for PMP, there is a strong pre-requisite criteria which involves individuals living and breathing PM prior to even being allowed to sit the exam so as such does have a very strong rigour behind who does and does not possess practical and theoretical knowledge in being a good PM.
But PM is not like engineering or accounting, it is a 'corporation' derived profession and as such, in my opinion, can be learnt within the environment itself (unlike engineering where you need to understand chemistry and physics to create an output). It is almost similiar to a trade where individuals are gauged by their output and quality of work. Like a bricklayer, you can get good workmanship or bad but, at least here in Aus, you don't necessarily need a trade ticket. PMs are the same in that you can get a good PM or a bad one but the elements which substantiate either are determined by an individual's ability to control their project and keep a cool head around it, whilst creating enthusiasm amongst team members to achieve a goal.
Like a few have said on this thread, it's another ticket to show you can do something but is it necessary maybe not? Saving Changes...
Holding PMP certification will certainly help you in minimizing the hazzles in your project. But again it depends on PM capability. Saving Changes...

This original post was some time back and I'd say from then the PMP has become more prominent, especially in industries where there are a lot of regulatory and compliance initiatives to follow such as healthcare, finance, etc. If you see the job postings for companies such as these, you'll typically see the PMP "highly recommended" or "required".
Given the current high unemployment, I can't see where one who works as a PM would not get this.
I have some fairly detailed comments and resources for the exam which you can find here:

Actually there is new research about this from the American Management Association: about 17% of people who have their PMP report getting a raise after getting certified. More people report other career benefits, like that it got them a new job (41%) or that it helped them get promoted (31%). Take a look at the research:
The PMP certificate is globally recognized, objective and quantifiable proof of your knowledge and understanding of project management. My experience is that PMP is increasingly required and is appreciated worldwide. Saving Changes...
