Which indicators, metrics or others are most suitable to measure the maturity level in project management of a particular organization?

Do you have a preferred PMMM?

I studied in CMU SEI so I have to say that I did not find any other maturity model that best fits for me than the published by the CMU SEI. After working from years creating environments where to apply what you ask I have to say: the first thing that is critical is to understand what maturity really is. When you understand that you can create your own indicators which is what I fully recommend. You can use OPM3 as a guide but what matters is to create your own indicators.

1) Are your processes documented?
2) Do you follow your documented processes?

I won't get into which processes you should have. This will vary by company. I have yet to see a company that follows the PMBOK Guide to the letter.

This is just a starting point. Do what adds value - think in terms of outcomes, not processes. Processes have outcomes, which can have value, but processes are not outcomes.

CMMI is definitely the measuring criteria .

In a nutshell, following are critical points or performance indicators

1) Customer's view on organization's capability in terms of project management :- Are the customers feel confident that when they handover a project to an organization, rest assured, the team will take care of it ?(this is a key metrics as per me as we are all customer oriented)

2) How the organization does interms of managing risks and responding to change

3) How the organization does in terms of learning and improving - This is a key factor to know what kind of framework and culture in place to learn from mistakes and improve

4) Focus on innovation and now a days, focus on automation : Finding out opportunities in automating tasks like testing or similar during the life cycle of project execution

5) Decision making capability of the leadership and timely escalation of issues

6) Documentation of processes and using the documentation , best practice in other projects across the organization
