Better career booster: "Delivery Manager" or "Project Manager"?

Looking for some forward-thinking career advice.

I'm the first & only project manager at a small company (that's growing quickly). My responsibilities are about to expand from just managing project delivery to managing all front-facing development delivery (in addition to project delivery).

If I say nothing to the powers that be, I'll retain my title of "Project Manager." I think it could be advantageous (if not more descriptive) to change my title to "Delivery Manager."

In your opinions and experiences, which title draws your attention more on an applicant's CV - Project Manager or Delivery Manager (assuming the lines of content are the same below it, i.e. managing development timelines, ensuring delivery, planning, reporting, etc.)

Thanks in advance!

I think it might be more word play than anything else. Titles in my humble opinion are irrelevant but some people take it seriously. Project Manager / Delivery Manager works if you ask me. The job responsibilities are the similar if not the same for both titles. You can keep your Project Manager title and your CV can read, performed Project Delivery.........or vice versa. See what your market is, and depending on which title sounds better to you, go for it!

Thanks for the reply. I agree, it's just a mind game at this point - what title might a future hiring manager be drawn to more than the other...Market research is a good suggestion, thank you again!

As Edward said, 'Project Manager / Delivery Manager' is a good title. However, if you could only choose one, I believe 'Project Manager' is the better title to use if you're trying to attract recruiters' attention.

It sounds like your small company is a service provider so your role sounds like a PM. You may be thinking of your role / title as a selling point but make sure you understand your role clearly. Your resume will get you in the door but you will have to clearly describe your role, projects and oversight of delivery of products/services.

So if you were asked to describe your role; what would you tell an interviewer?

A product life-cycle goes way beyond a Project Life-cycle . So if your day to day work involves delivering the Project plus the operational support and further development of the product after gauging the Market acceptance , you are most likely a Product Development Manager.
