Many of the answers provide recommend 'monitoring' and 'control'. Which is all fine but does not tell us what to monitor and how to control.
From a monitoring perspective you have to establish key indicators - what is critical to the project. Monitoring everything, if even possible, is a time waster (both in terms of gathering and analyzing what it means) and can provide false comfort.
From a control perspective, what is it you can control? Can you control time - no. However you can control quality and costs. To buy time - you decrease quality and/or increase expenditure.
Alternatively, you increase effectiveness - do things faster, better, more efficiently.
So, you monitor effectiveness and control processes. Saving Changes...
