What industry is Project Management?
When I came to Saudi Arabia, my employer provided training services for the Saudi National Guard, and I started to develop training curriculums for them. What I observed was the project and program management of the provided services. My desire to learn about project management stem from my involvement. I studied my masters and PMP for the next five years. Now I want to do more with the knowledge and skills I have learned.
In my spare time, I used job search engines like Indeed, USA Jobs, and Monster for PMP employment opportunities. What I discover is the purpose of my question. Most job postings for PMP certified is in the IT industry, or if I looked specifically in Construction Management, I find opportunity. So, I am asking for your opinion, is project management industry or skill set back with particular field experience?
I know based on a functional versus a project focused organization, we could be an addition or driving force for our assigned projects. Saving Changes...
This question comes always to my head and most of the time is confusing. And as I read along the replies from different experts and project managers, I guess that the role is depending on the size of company. let's say in a multinational construction company, usually there are different departments and resources, so I believe the presence of construction manager will play the technical role and report to the project manager and the project manager will manage the overall project life cycle. But I still do not have a strong information if the project manager really doesn't need to have expertise in his industry as there is no common standard metrics across all the industries to plan the and measure the project performance. Sure the construction phases and processes will differ from the IT and from healthcare. What do you think? Saving Changes...

In my opinion, a construction Industry Project Manager position requires matching field management experience, probably 10 years or more to truly understand the skills required to ascend to the Project Manager level. Usually, at this level a contracting company has entrusted a PM with a multi-million dollar effort to execute the installation of the Deliverables.
Construction Projects cannot utilize purely "management" skills without the ability to understand and mitigate the extreme risks involved with the processes of Contracts and Safety. Also, the ability to read and understand plans, perform constructability reviews, and recognize design errors that could prove fatal (FIU Bridge disaster) are absolute requirements for a Construction Project Manager.
My understanding of the IT profession is that the execution process is merely carrying through with the design through to the designed deliverable. However, mere execution of the design in Construction can easily result in disaster and death.
In my opinion, a pure "management" position is not practical nor desirable for the Construction Industry.......
