The first thing is to understand that there are not TOP PM skills because to consider some skills "TOP" will depend on the context where you will use it. I sustain (because my personal experence and others experience) that a PM can manage any type of project. So, now that some words becomes buzzwords, here comes two of them. A PM (a human being in general) must behaive with Agile approach. Agile is a way of thinking and bechaive with focus on client and quality. When you behaive Agile you gain into Agility wich is the ability to react to environmental changes and create environmental changes. The last one is critical to survive, grow and develop.
Well i agree with you Sergio, Agility will definitely help,, How to acquire sound knowledge for a particular practice area?

One of the often missing activities when somebody is assigned to an initiative is Elicitation. Before you start working you need to take knowledge about: 1-the domain where you are assigned to (terms, process, steholders, locations, etc). We use the Zachman framework row 1 as a guide or checklist to understand what to find. 2-the business where the initiative is started to solve the business problem. We use PESTLE analysis for macro environement and Porter`s Five Forces for micro environment. 3-the stakeholders that perform in that business. What are the key roles and the key concerns for stakeholders into organizations that perform into the business. We use SPIN selling selling method as a guide to understand that.

Each PM and their career road-map is different. Do you have a personal development plan, know what your strengths, weaknesses are and have a good understanding of your key behaviors are that you want to improve?
It's important to know this to map out your goals and objectives before you commit to work in different industries, on different projects etc. Also, do you have a mentor, coach or sponsor to offer feedback and guidance. You may just be repeating or not improving some of the key behaviors that you need to work on to improve your performance, get a promotion or as you mention "attain top or real PM skills".

Yes, on top of practice and just working projects - finding a great PM mentor is the #1 way, to me, of really building those PM skills. Being the secondary PM on a project, supporting the Sr. PM, is a great way to learn their techniques, get access to templates and materials that work for them, and learn their tips and tricks. The caveat here is that they need to be a really great one. Overall though, always stay hungry to learn from anyone and you'll grow!
I agree with you and thanks to the community we have here i have found and connected with people like you ..Can you share lesson learned form your mentor, that would be nice ??

Agree with Eric.

Communication skills - You’ll need a level of charisma to inspire your team members and to explain work processes to stakeholders. Project management communication comes down to being clear about goals, concise about expectations, and concrete about quantitative results.

In other words, communication is at the heart of project success. But improving communication is trickier than it sounds. That’s why there are the Three Cs of Communication: Be Clear, Be Concise, and Be Concrete. With these three Cs, you will be able to better communicate your goals to your team, and your team will be able to give you the feedback you need to better manage them.
The three C are really important in any field :) Thank you brother

As mentioned by others - the best PM skills cannot be achieved by studying, it can only be obtained through experience. Certification without experience would be worthless hence the reason why you can only certified with a fair amount of practical experience, sadly something that is sometimes circumvented.

Communication, facilitation, stakeholder management and analytical skills would be at the top of my list for PM skills to master.
