What is your definition of best? Being the first to market is an advantage but not if you have a faulty product. Being best or good at what you do is also an advantage but it depends who your influencers are and what weight they carry to help you stand out in your field. Many have commented about perfectionism; this can be risk is this a trait used often as a PM.
Neither applies in my opinion; in a recent Princeton research study 1% only applies to professions, Here are the results:
In a meta-analysis of 88 studies on deliberate practice, the researchers found that practice accounted for just a 12% difference in performance in various domains.
What's really surprising is how much it depends on the domain:
• In games, practice made for a 26% difference
• In music, it was a 21% difference
• In sports, an 18% difference
• In education, a 4% difference
• In professions, just a 1% difference
