If you were building a team and could hand-pick its members, what are the key traits or attributes you would look for? In other words, what makes a team member valuable and indispensable? Saving Changes...
I believe that what makes a member of the team valuable is the knowledge of the work that we are going to carry out, the responsibility with the activities that are entrusted to him and the understanding with the other people of the work team.

Eduin, I agree with your suggestions - domain knowledge, responsibility & team spirit. Thanks
Humble, Hungry, and Smart (as in people smart) Recently finished the book "The Ideal Team Player: How to recognize and cultivate the three essential virtues" It's a little corny with the fabricated story of a small building company getting a new CEO, but it does an excellent job of showing how Patrick Lencioni (author) and his team derived these three virtues and why they work.

Willing to work with and help others. A person who can't work with others can seriously disrupt a team's effectiveness.

Agree with you Eric. Teamwork is critical to success and a disruptive team member negatively affects the rest of the team and the project.

I would want people who check their ego at the door, are willing to embrace change and failure and learn from the failure, and can move from ambiguous tasks to defined tasks without some sort of task anxiety.

True Ed. Being confident in ones abilities and taking pride in work are both essential for success, but when confidence and pride start morphing into an inflated ego, his/her career will suffer. Nobody is perfect, and we all need the support of others. Egos simply get in the way.
Comments made above are all great, In addition, attitudes of willing to learn and placing team goal over personal interest might be inclusive.

Good point Sungjoon. Commitment to a common goal is one of the cornerstones of teamwork. It occurs when each member of the team focuses on achieving the team's purpose over and above their individual objectives.
My three would be Self motivated, self starter, Adaptable.

Appreciate your feedback Naomi. You are absolutely right. Those who are motivated find it much easier to motivate others and as a self-starter,one would be brimming with energy and enthusiasm.

This is a great response. While no team member is indispensable, since every project is different, and every task can move in a number of directions. However, these three, Self-Motivated, Self-starter, and adaptable are really critical, as it Patient. They are the real starting points on assembling a good, useful and productive team.

Any team member is dispensable. I don't think that there exists an indispensable team member. The needs of the project dictate who is indispensable and I don't think it's based on personal traits of team members.

I respect your point of view Denise.
There are some employees here and there who enter the work environment with an unmistakable ego, thinking they are God’s gift to the world and an absolute expert in their specific field. At times, these people actually are experts in their field, and other times they are not. Nonetheless, what people should not forget is that no matter what, they are dispensable. In the world we live in today, there are millions of people with skills in a plethora of work industries. Someone, somewhere has more knowledge than you and is more talented than you. This is only a fact that needs to be realized. No need to fear though, because there are definitely ways a person can make themselves an indispensable member of a professional team. This occurs not only through hard work and skill, but also through building strong bonds with coworkers, by developing the right attitude and a mix of the valuable traits shared by the experts in this thread and elsewhere. Cheers!
I great team member is one that complement the team.
Each team member have it's strength, what is good is when they complement one an other.
Team player not individual player

Vincent - You've highlighted a very important characteristic of effective work teams - the shared capacity. Every member has areas of strength and some weak spots. A good team member provides some unique skills and/or knowledge that move the team forward. Thanks
A team member should know when he has to move to front and lead and also realize when he should take back seat and let others drive and also should be willing to risk and lead when others are not confident or when some would prefer to fall behind due to uncertain territory. This should be discussed with project manager/sponsor and/or governance or functional leaders

Project managers do much more than mange projects.Teams rely on their project manager’s leadership for guidance and encouragement. They’ll respond positively to quality leadership, by building stronger relationships and rising to project challenges!
