Hello PM community.
I have been assigned a Smart City project and I was wondering if any of you have work a project like this before? Any recommendations on what is the best approach to start?
This is the first time I've heard of it. I'd start by researching what a Smart City is.
I'm mainly responding because I'd like to know the answer, and this way I'll get a notification when someone else answers your question. If it's what I think it is, be prepared to do a gap analysis and deal with government bureaucracy. Saving Changes...
It's an urbanization and revitalization project. Sounds like fun. You'll probably spending a lot of time using left brain thinking; hope to hear more about it. You can find lots of information and TED talks on this topics. Many project launches like this happening globally... Saving Changes...

No experience to provide recommendation, but it does sound very interesting. I'm sure many here, myself included, would appreciate learning more through your journey and experience. Saving Changes...

Hi Francisco, if you are developing 'smart city' virtual game(software) then you will have to start from the SDLC process. and if you are assigned a smart urbanization project for a area(real estate) then it will be a huge project, you will have to start the work together with several other project managers and portfolio manager, starting by initial project charter design and brain storming sessions. it could be a huge project. you must have heard the recent 'indian government's smart city project' plans. you may visit their portal as well for some analysis. best of luck.. Hi Francisco,
I know there is a smart city web site, maybe you can find some information there.
Smart City means many things, not the same to all.
It is not a project in fact it is a Program!
Personally I would start by identifying al potential projects, prioritize some visible small project to have a quick impact and gain acceptance.
Here In Montréal, they talk about Smart City, they have started many large projects mostly un finish at this time. I think many smaller projects could have been done first, or in parallel.
One simple project is to change the lights for pedestrians have them cross in all direction at once, then the cars. That removes pedestrians from crossing blocking turning cars. Much smarter, involve no infrastructure change. Just my 2 cents.
Keep the community posted of this nice kind of project Saving Changes...
Hello Francisco, I have been reading about how technology can help to make us a better and easiest live, This could mean a lot of things, you must to define where you want to focus, and it can be a lot of projects each one, Vincent comment it before me. Smart city may include data catch and analisys, to find a way to make things better,
Some examples are: smarth ligths to give way (green ligth) when no trafic on the other side, Tools to measure electricity consumption and determine the time ranges of greater and lesser demand and thus be able to find improvements in the distribution of energy. Also some types of software that provide you with constant and updated information of events that happen in the city, including slow traffic, accidents, emergencies, sites of interest, and also to be able to report events to be attended by whoever is required, be they firefighters, police , ambulances, etc. Saving Changes...
Hello and thank you all for your replies. Let me extend on what we are planning. There is a city in Honduras named Comayagüela that is part of the Central District of the capital. The area has little to no economical development and we are planning to bring it back by starting a Smart City project in which urbanism and technology can meet.
