Question that stumped me. It has been determined that several deliverables due today do not meet the technical specifications. A change request has been generated and approved. The defect repair is repaired, or so it seems. During what process are changes validated?
The Answer is Control Quality and hence my issue.
Control Quality spits out Validate Changes. It goes into the M&CPW as an input. How can a change that is an output be validated if it is not an input. I know all 618 ITTOs in great detail but there are times when I get one wrong. Trying to understand this reasoning. My test date approaches and I am simply fine tuning my knowledge base.
From my understanding, Monitor & Control Project Work as its name mentioned is about Monitoring & Control all the work within the Project SOW. From this perspectives, approved CR that has been reviewed to be considered VALIDATED CHANGES (this happened in Control Quality) has to be reported to Monitor & Control Project Work. This process then consolidates the Validated changes together with other SOW to understand the current state of the project in overall. Through Monitor & Control Project Work, this process may or may not identify Change Request. If CR is identified, Perform ICC will be the process that Approve/Reject. Approved CR will again be implemented, reviewed & become VALIDATED CHANGES.

Your question is really good, I myself never thought of it until I read your post. Thank you.

I have created a simple explanation through my own learning . Hope this helps. It also clarifies how the Processes interact
What is the aim of Direct and Manage Project Work? The answer is "producing project deliverable". At this stage you are directing the Execution and the team is producing the deliverable
Let’s say you work for a Ball Bearing Manufacturing company and the team has produced some ball bearings as part of Execution.
The work performance data says “100 ball bearings failed quality checks."
What is the aim of Monitor and Control Project work? The answer is "Ensuring performance to the Project Management Plan”. You instantly investigate what is wrong and the Test Manager's control chart shows that measurements are out of Upper Control limits of +-3 Standard Deviations. The process is therefore out of control. This is the Work performance Information that you need to report to your Project Board.
You now need to implement some changes to fix the defect because The customer’s requirements captured by the Business Analyst in the Requirement Specification says that the acceptance criteria of the ball bearings must stay within the control limits of +-3 Standard deviations. Therefore the deliverable requires change and it needs to go through the Perform Integrated Change Control Process.
You analyse what needs to change by meeting with the Test Manager, analyse the impacts of the changes to the schedule, cost, scope, quality, human resources, and risks. You inform your customer and then document and present all this information to your Change Board through a Change Request.
You are now in the Perform Integrated Change Control Process.
The output of the Perform Integrated Change Control Process is Approved Change Requests. You are now able to adjust your quality process or testing method.
You go back to the Direct and Manage Project Work with the approved change as an input
How do you know that the defect has been fixed?
Because The Test Team Performs Quality Control tests again and at the other end of the Control Quality Process you find that the Ball Bearings are now within specification as per control chart. The Change has thus been validated.
The outputs of your Direct and Manage Project work are the work performance data that says “Ball bearings re-test passed”.
This Input called as “Validated Changes” then goes back into your Monitor and Control Project Work and again comes out as Work Performance Information. “Ball bearings defect fixed by changing test plan and machine XYZ”. Saving Changes...
