A friend of mine asked me about books that cover the basics of project management. Any suggestions?

Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep book is good for explaining the basics of project management. I still have the one I used to study for the PMP almost a decade ago; I use it to explain project management concepts to new PMs and non-PMs. It's also good to help those with no clue about project management understand enough to run a project well.

The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management by Eric Verzuh. This book is aligned with PMBOK 5th edition. Easy to read and understand basic concepts of PM, tools and techniques, and some real scenarios applied.

Rita Mulcahy is the first that come to mind.

Not that I know the book but "Project Management For Dummies" might be a idea

"The 12 Predictable and Avoidable Pitfalls Every Project Faces" by Kimberly Wiefling. I just picked this up again - it is a very quick read and it has some very good basic project management advice.

I'd add PM 101: According to the Olde Curmudgeon by Francis M. Webster Jr. to the list. The Mythical Man-Month by Fred Brooks provides a number of good lessons for someone just starting out...

I would add Harold Kerzner's "Project Management : A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling" to the list.
