We are currently using MS Project to assist with our program management. A group of senior developers have introduced "Jira" into the development area. I have researched the product and it seems to help the developers track their issues below the level of PM that we currently track. --- IS ANYONE FAMILIAR WITH JIRA FROM A PM STAND-POINT? GOOD TOOL? ANY FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED. Thanks. Saving Changes...

Hi Craig, Jira is a very nice J2EE based tool for systems development oriented tracking and management of bugs and issues. It is provided by Atlassian, an Australian software company based in Sydney. One of our US based customers uses it and is quite happy with it. But I wouldn't compare Jira to Project, rather to Clearquest and all the others. In the context of systems development oriented project management, tools like Jira are quite nice and complement your existing project scheduler and provide greater and easier tracking and management of bugs and issues; both a scheduler and an issue tracker can be part of your program management set of tools along with the other things. Also, Jira is very attractively priced. If your dev team likes it, let them use it. I would suspect the ROI would be practically immediate. Good luck. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International Saving Changes...
The main goals of this plugin are to provide JIRA users with an interactive and simple interface to manage their projects (AJAX-based) and tools to increase the visibility and traceability of ongoing versions.
Based on card views, GreenHopper offers a Planning Board that will help you dispatch your issues by version or components, a Task Board that will help you with the workflow of your issues and a Chart Board that will help you track your progression.
GreenHopper is free for qualified open source projects and non-profits, and commercial users will benefit from an upfront and no-hassle pricing and licensing policy. A free, 15-day evaluation is available for download.
MS Project is good for creating and maintaining a project plan itself, while JIRA is a perfect tool to manage and track resources and assignments. The combination MS Project + JIRA works really well. We use Ceptah Bridge MS Project add-in to synchronize tasks in Project with issues in JIRA. Check it out here: www.ceptah.com. Saving Changes...

Hi Craig,
The JIRA tool will definitely be an asset for defect and issue tracking. Last time, I checked out JIRA there was a very useful workflow tool.
My recommendation is to make certain you have key status categorizes and a standardize issues priority established. These items will help the development team work through the defects in a prioritized fashion.
There is no Jira plug-in substitute for MS Project. Using MS Project and Jira is a very powerful combination for any PM.
I am also currently trying to have my work package activities in Jira so that the resources can update them and then sync that to my MS Project some how. Problem: I have Jira ondemand which allows very few options for ad-ins.
