While I have done a lot of work on various parts of project management, and have completed many graduate courses in the different aspects of project management (based upon PMBOK), I still don't feel confident applying for a PM position. This is because I haven't managed a complete project from befinning to end (using traditional methods/reports/etc). What I would like to do is find some documentation that says "here is a project, this is what needs to be done by the project manager throughout the project from beginning to end".
Can anyone point me in the right direction for information on this? What steps does a PM take from beginning to end (Writing a charter/reports/updates/milestones/etc.). Saving Changes...

Hi Dan, you have come to a good place, Gantthead, to find a lot of pertinent project management information. Don't be too unsure of or worried about your abilities..! All PMs, even experienced ones, will struggle when placed in an "ad hoc" project environment with little to no structure, processes, and standards. Likewise, project environments that do provide useful and usable processes, tools, and techniques see that PMs of all skill and experience levels perform at higher and more consistent levels. You will have no difficulty finding documentation and even Staples sells a laminated project management reference card aligned to the PMBOK for about five dollars. They don't sell experience, however. Regarding pursuing a PM position, you might find it very helpful to attend your local PMI chapter meetings. And if you don't have one already, you might want to develop a relationship with a PM mentor who can advise and direct you in the many areas of the PM profession. Also, if you can email me at [email protected], I would be happy to send a number of useful items that might help you get started.
