Will the total cost of operations be cheaper with Business Objects or Information Builders?
We are making a purchasing decision within the next 5 days.
We need to hit multiple non-relational databases in addition to relational databases.
We don't want to build a data warehouse (yet).
Assume we have no expertise in either toolset, and we are not replacing an existing BI solution. Saving Changes...

Dear Anonymous, we too have been looking for a TCO comparison or any kind of a BI report that includes Business Objects. They didn't participate in the Ventana Business Intelligence TCO Benchmark nor did they participate in the CAmagazine 2004 Business Intelligence report. Information Builders has a good track record of winning or scoring high on these TCO reports as well as ease of use. As you know, they have been at this a while and WebFOCUS is a very nice product. Business Objects' BI platform is also an excellent offering. The going rate for a TCO report is $1,500. Given what you will be investing in BI, it wouldn't be a bad investment to buy a head to head Information Builders and Business Objects TCO comparison from Ventana or the others. Did any of the vendor references provide you with TCO information that they may have assimilated? Please do post back what you find and what you decided. I am sure many others would be interested. Good luck. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International Saving Changes...
We did not invest in a Ventana report. The attached file from Business Objects shows a 30% TCO advantage of B/O over Cognos. However, because of reasons other than TCO, more to do with data integration value in our environment of their respective solutions we have eliminated Business Objects from our finalists in preference to Information Builders (IBI). IBI supplied us with a portion of a 2003 Ventana TCO report, showing IBI winning lowest TCO in 5 of 24 scenarios: Parameterized Reports for 1,000 users, Parameterized Reports for 10,000 users, User-defined Reports for 1,000 users, User-defined Reports for 10,000 users, and Agents for 10,000 users. Dear Anonymous, thanks for the BO - Cognos TCO report. Sounds like you have made a well studied and wise choice. Good luck with IBI..! Great company and product. Hopefully, BO will participate more in the head to head 3rd party comparisons. Thanks again! -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International Saving Changes...
