Nothing special, Mayte. I was recently asked that question which i answered. I thought it would be an interesting question to ask the community. What do you do when asked to lead a project on behalf of a client?

To me the starting point is: what is the business relationship with that external client? In other words, how does the PM get paid? The PM could be a contractor for that client, or could be employed by a company that works as a Service Provider. For the first case, the PM gets paid directly from the client, so it is not very external; it is close to internal. For the second case, the PM gets paid by the Service Provider, so it means there are other stakeholders in your company, and you need to pay attention to their interest too such as the Service Provider profit margin.

Some of the projects that I led, were as Dominic described in their second example, it means I was paid by a Service Provider and leading projects for the client. In those cases, you have to find a balance between doing what is requested by the client without forgetting your company margin and numbers.

Each client was different and requires basically adaptability, from clients in manufacturing plants where we used Lean Six Sigma, to another that their teams are super - Scrum.

There is no single answer to that. I have managed Customer projects/programs Under different conditions:
- as Prime Contractor where I managed Customer projects for my company
- as Prime Contractor in a Joint Project Management approach ("Two-In-A-Box") where my company works as the unique PM Service provider using our PM méthodologies
- as external provider sourced by the Customer where I had to apply the Customer PM méthodologies

So different cases different customers and different approches.
