One of the best courses I took from ESI was How to Rescue Troubled Projects. There were many good tips on running projects, how to spot trouble and also how to remedy the situation. It was also helpful for when I had to jump into the middle of a project I know where to go look for critical information.

There are all kinds of good courses, but what really makes a class good is the instructor. The material can always be informative but if the instructor really doesn't know much about the subject or is not good at delivering the information then it is hard to see value-added.

Cost vs. Value - again you can get some inexpensive training as well as free webinars with very good information through this site.

Hi Ruby,

Nowadays Project management has become very vast. You need to first decide on which path you want to go and then decide the courses you need to join.

For example, there are PMP and PRICE2 certifications but its implementation and recognition is different(Please do not believe in geographical difference) but the way it is used and implemented.
Then you have different courses for Risk Management, as Susan has mentioned above.

My advice is first decide the goal, then decide the path to achieve it.

That's great, I will have a think what route I wish to go. Many Thanks for your help.
Hi Ruby

Project managers like you who are looking to enhance their careers can chose certification and courses from a list. PMP and CAPM are the two main go-tos for certification and also you may consider Prince2

However, my vote goes to PMP and the details you can check on pmi.org

Those who are advising the PMP - Ruby is new to project management so how could the PMP be an option?

Ruby,

There are a lot of materials online - check Bookboon.com you will find many books on project management either free or very low cost for e-books. So start by reading. Then find low-cost online courses. Now keep in mind - not all of these will be great quality but a start.

Once you have an idea, you can look for ways to get more in depth or certifications such as PRINCE2, CAPM, IPMA-Level D or similar introductory certifications.

Thank you Mounir, I will look on Bookboon.com. I have applied for a online course which has bee been reduced from £199 to £44, I'm going to give that a shot, then as you suggested, will look into other courses which are more expensive. I'm going to try and look at what experience I can get in project management within my team At the moment I am contracting, so not sure if they will allow me to do any project work. Many Thanks Ruby
