Once upon a time long long ago, King Waterfall ruled the land. He was a wise king who guided his people well. But many of his subjects in the outer reaches of his kingdom didn’t understand his teachings, and became frustrated when their lives didn’t turn out as planned. They wanted a new king. Some of the most influential people in the land held a meeting in the mountains, and made four declarations of how things should be.
One day Princess Agile arrived in the kingdom. She was beautiful and full of energy and walked among the people. King Waterfall, in his ivory tower, didn’t realise he was losing the loyalty of his people until it was too late. His kingdom was shrinking and none of his advisers told him the simple truth. Bit by bit, Princess Agile began to take over. When people who didn’t like her began to mutter and complain, she went and talked to them, listened, and sometimes changed her ways.
King Waterfall saw that he was losing, but he was still a wise king. He sought a meeting with Princess Agile and told her: “We are both fighting Lord Chaos in our own ways. Let us not fight each other.” Princess Agile, being very practical, agreed.
And it is reasonable to forecast that they will live happily together for ever after – as long as they continue to communicate.
Thank you Liana, yes Deepesh took off down a different road and gave a great analogy!

I love both of these analogies/stories Tom and Deepesh! I have been searching for a good analogy to demonstrate the need for high level estimates and I'm still working on that if either of you have suggestions.
Thanks, Penny
