It seems that a number of organizations implementing Project Server are not using SharePoint for document management and other collaboration features, rather they are continuing to use LAN shared folders. I would suspect that both approaches are perfectly correct, depending upon organization unique factors. Does anyone have a "pros and cons" list or practical experiences to share regarding the decision to use or not use SharePoint? -- Mark Perry, VP Customer Care, BOT International

We are juist beginning in our use of SharePoint. We find it useful to place team and project documents up in SharePoint, but we are not trying to put evrything in it. We still have a large LAN shared folder established for work in process files and personal storage requirements.

Dear Anonymous, are you also using Project Server? And within SharePoint, do you have multiple team sites. And are you using or plan to use the SharePoint features such as Task Lists, Discussion Boards, Team Survey, Annoucements, etc.? Thanks again for your reply. -- Mark Perry, VP Customer Care, BOT International

Yes, we are using Project Server. We are slowing moving from desktop to web-based.

We use SharePoint, but not Project Server. For significant projects with key customers, we set up SharePoint team sites for the project team, customers, and partners to access project documents and reports. For scheduling, we still use Project Professional.

We have and use SharePoint within IT, but will be implementing Hummingbird through our entire company. We may continue to use SharePoint as Hummingbird provides indexing to support it, but haven't decided yet.

Mark,

I am planning an implementation of both Sharepoint and Project Server. How far have you made it down the implementation path? thanks.

Dear Dante,

Sorry for not responding sooner, I have been absent from Gantthead for a few months. We have made it pretty far down the path with SharePoint and Project Server. We have found that if left unattended from a PMO policy point of view, SharePoint can quickly become a big mess of teamsites and document folders scattered about. But, when used in a more controlled manner, ie. only large projects, not all projects, get a teamsite, etc, SharePoint is a tremendously effective and useful collaboration tool for the PMO and project teams. Feel free to drop me an email if you would like to connect up and talk shop! Cheers!
