I was wondering if anyone in the group had any experience or opinion
on web-based PM software. Are they comprable to software packages
like MS Project? Are they only best for projects that involve off-site
or telecommuting team members?

Dear Anonymous, there are many pros and cons to client-server vs. web-based software of any kind, including project management. There are a number of factors to consider; deployment cost, support, usability, functionality, security, application integration, data management, etc. For example, remote, off-site, and telecommuting team members may lend to a web-based solution, but then what kind of functionality, if any, does the user have if and when off-line? This may be an issue or not even relevant. Fortunately, more and more solutions providers are offering both ASP web-based and in-house implementation offerings. Also, since they provide both alternatives, they can give you excellent insight on which alternative might be best for you. One such firm, EPM Solutions, does this. You might visit them at www.epmsolutions.net and give their President, Greg Winthalter (888-822-8246) a call. He is very responsive. Hope this helps. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

How much does web-based PM software cost on a per user basis? Is it less costly than using Micrsoft Project?

Dear Anonymous, I suppose the answer is, "It Depends." Assuming the functionality is the same between web-based PM software and MS Project, which is not likely to ever be the case, you could look at the cost of the annual web-based PM subscription and compare it to the license price for MS Project. As the cost of the web-based PM packages can range from $100 to $500 per year, you might find that on price alone a high end web-based PM offering may be quite a bit more costly than MS Project over the course of a few years. As always, the answer greatly depends upon what your needs and requirements are. Hope this helps. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International
