I have been working as Technical Project Manager/Technical Delivery Manager for the last 1.5 years. Now I am looking for a new job opportunity in other organizations with better career options.
I would like to learn and practice project management in industries other than IT.
But I am not sure how to start with?
How much domain knowledge matters for a role of PM?
What are the skills that would be needed to venture into a new industry?
What are the suggested steps to get myself introduced into a new one? Saving Changes...
Domain knowledge is definitely important for a PM. Even in IT industry, you will see very few testing domain people reach to Project Management. QA engineer may become QA manager but rarely will become a project manager. This is because their limited hands-on experience in all aspects of development and management. So, would suggest you to grab skills of new industry you want to start with. What happens at grass root level and the challenges faced should be understood by a PM. You can become a good PM if you can analyze challenges and can improve the process based on your experience. All the best, Khushboo! Saving Changes...

I'd suggest learning about the various industries from members within your local chapter, if you are a member. There is also a vast amount of experience, right here, in this community. Whereas you won't be getting hands on knowledge with my suggestions, it will give a sense of similarities in which you could leverage your current experience.
That said, IT certainly is a growing industry. Maybe moving to another opportunity elsewhere, in the same industry, will provide more career growth.
Good luck Khushboo. Saving Changes...

Although theoretically, Domain knowledge should not matter, the reality is all industries require domain knowledge from their PMs, even for IT industry there is many sub-domains that may require specialization particularly in an area like Agile / SCRUM software development where no official role for PM
Good luck with your adventure, I suggest concentrating on a domain and having an interest in a sub-domain Saving Changes...

No matter the PM work from years in the same industry and assigned to projects in the same organization each time the PM is assigned to a new initiative she/he must perform the most often forgotten activity: elicitation. And that is it because an organization will act into quit different business and knowledge for that business is needed. By performing elicitation you have to take knowledge about the domain (terms, process, locations, entities, etc), you have to take knowledge about environment (external and internal), you have to take knowledge about key stakeholders that performing into the business (it will be CIO, CEO, CTO, etc) and you have to take knowledge about problems those stakeholders have to solve into other organizations inside the domain. So, that´s all. That is bacause lot of other people like me have lead project in lot of different domains (while I came from systems). Saving Changes...
