Hello! We are integrating Project Management processes and practices into an International company that had never used them formally before. I am trying to move slowly and not require too much formal documentation, but I need help gaining buy in from our teams and management alike.
Does anyone have advice on how best to "teach up" to upper Management? Does anyone have helpful hints on what has worked for them in the past, and what has not worked?
Also, do you have advice on how best to show Project Management success to management, beyond hitting deadlines?
Thank you in advance,
Deb Saving Changes...

I worked on it for years and I am in the group that has in charge the job you describe above. There is only one reason: value. It has no sense to demostrate things like "project management success". The only thing that counts is value. Mostly, something is valuable to people when it solves a problem. Inside organizations problem situations arrives when needs to put strategy into action arrives. So, project mangement utilization must have a strategic reason. On the other side, "to sell" the idea you have to discover "the pain" on your stakeholders that will justify to use project management as the solution for the pain. I am not a seller but because my job in some companies I was trained in selling methods. That helps me a lot. What I use is "Solution Selling" or "SPIN Selling" selling method and it words for me and my group.

Thank you for your feedback! I am new to this, so can you give me an example of "Solution Selling" or "SPIN Selling"?

Personal advise, you have to be careful. Try to understand the culture first, is it a rigid culture or a culture that is open to ideas and willing to listen? Sometimes, in old fashioned mentality cultures were people are afraid of change, you may get smiles and at the end, the ideas will be viewed as a way of challenging the status quo. Try to approach it with care and wisdom. Try first to discuss some of the ideas with your immediate supervisors and get a feel of what they think, do it in casually without going thru the details. Then listen to what they say and analyze the behaviors of the few that you discuss with.

I agree with Mohamad. Sensitivity to cultures is a must if you want to "connect" and integrate your PM processes and practices. You cannot force change on an organization overnight. You have to come up with a carefully planned change strategy to address resistance to change, or it will affect your effectiveness and will trigger strong resistance and organizational turnover.

All Executives around the world understand cost savings. Translate the time, labor hours, avoidance of rework, and the other results of successful project management into dollars, and they'll take notice.

Eric,
Thank you for your feedback, this makes sense to me. We talk about ROI quite a bit here. Are there any templates you use to hammer this point home when reporting you could recommend?

Absolutely, thank you. I am working on a gentle approach but one that shows marked change from the old ways.
