Bringing together multiple business entities

Our company consists of six independent business entities. We have some shared IT, but each business unit also has its own IT. We are trying to introduce a consistent PM process, but are having difficulties due to differing preferences amongst the business units. In particular the application developers and the web developers have different SDLC models. We would like to have one process, but that doesn't seem possible.

Dear Anonymous, some folks view a PM process as a one shoe fits all sizes proposition, others view a PM process as a framework that provides a collection of PM workflows best suited for the project type. You can do one approach or the other, but not both. There are a number of vendors that provide out-of-the-box solutions for project management processes, visual workflows, project step guidance, template libraries, etc. We would be delighted to demonstrate our solution, Processes On Demand, to you and you can find many others like RUP, PMCoP, Keane MDC, etc. on the web. Hope to hear from you! -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

The initiative to streamline the Project Management Processes across the different business units is indeed a big challenge. It requires endorsement from the Management .
The first step could be the person who wishes to streamline it , for example , yourself needs to approach your Department head and put the proposal forward to either :-

1) Champion the PM Process yourself
2) Suggest the establishment of a Project Management Office (PMO) that will provide the guidance and tools for uniform project management across the business units.
3) Based on the suggestion from Mark Price Perry, You can engage an organization such as theirs, who will define the best -of-breed project management process. Even after the vendor completes their work , there still needs to be an ongoing custodian of the process within your organization and that is best served by having a PMO

Also remember that SDLC is only one small piece of the entire process - to Deliver the Software. The Developers can continue to use their own process for software development . However there needs to be an over arching Governance/Project Delivery Model that will encompass the Project Business Case, Funding , Development , Testing , Operational handover and closure
