I did not use a simulator. Found some mock exams online (some listed in this thread). But certainly can see a benefit. They help get you in the mindset of what to expect in the exam, but not a must have. Depends on the individual. Saving Changes...

If you study/learn/practice your PMP exam preparation in paper based and wish to take exam in paper based, then simulator will not add any value in your exam performance and no need to buy simulator.
But if you wish to take exam in prometric center which is Computer Based Test (CBT) after so many months study/learn/practice in black and white, you will feel awkward with the environment and miss so many aspects which need to be very fine tuned and there might be a performance drop. How can a simulator help in passing the real PMP exam?
* It was useful for identifying Knowledge Areas I needed to focus on studying further (more empirical than me trying to identify what I didn't know--sometimes the questions prompt you to think more carefully about you may have superficially thought was a concept you knew); sometimes questions included terms that I realized I did not know as well as I thought and needed to review.

* I'm not an instructor and only just passed the exam (so I'm only familiar with one simulator), but I definitely think it is worthwhile to use the simulator for good preparation (assuming a simulator faithful to the exam, you'll know the options you will have like 'mark for review' and get a sense for pacing and how carefully you have to think about what the question is asking, what process you are in, and so on).

I used two examination simulators before I took my PMP exam. One from Management Plaza (https://mplaza.training/) and one from Skillsoft (the Skillsoft one was available through my job so I can't share the link for that one).
The exam simulators were great and taking enough of them really gives you the practice required to take the test. One thing I think you should be aware of however, is the number of questions that are in the exam simulator pool. If you are taking the same exam multiple times and you are getting better and better scores, it could just be that you are memorizing the test questions. The larger the pool of questions you are using the less likely this is to happen (hence why I used two exam simulators). Saving Changes...
