I have just 'inherited' a department in Japan and I am looking to recruit experienced software Project Managers or failing that train suitable candidates. Much to my consternation I am having little or no success in finding experienced PM's in Japan and I can find very little by way of training material that has been translated in to the Japanese language. I have contacted the Tokyo Branch of the PMI but was wondering if anyone else could provide some help or information in regards to these problems?
TIA Ian

Check out Processes On Demand, by BOT International. It is a complete project management process solution that you can put on a intranet or a LAN. It comes with multiple processes (PMBOK, SDLC, etc.) process narrations, workflows, templates, etc. It is available in several languages including Japanese. Here is the URL to their Japanese page. http://www.botinternational.com/japanese.htm

Leitch-san ??????????????????? ???????????????????My Japanese is rusty, so I better continue in English. Having lived and worked a number of years in Japan, I found the project managers and level of project management to be outstanding, especially in planning. My experiences were in the high-tech manufacturing domain, so I would not be surprised if other segments might have different capabilities. Are you looking for Japanese locals or ex-pats fluent in Japanese? I would be heppy to put you in contact with a few PMs and helpful resources. Also, regarding materials, when you get a moment let me show you Processes On Demand, a complete PM process solution with multiple project types (PMBOK, SDLC, Change Management, etc.) process narrations, visual workflows, step by step guidance, auditable and verifiable templates, forms, and checklists, etc. It is available in several languages including Japanese. I hope you look me up, I would be pleased to make your acquaintance. ??????????????-- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

Ian, the Japanese in my post to you below came through as question marks. That's probably for the better as my Japanese is a bit rusty. Regarding resources and materials, feel free to look me up or let me know how to contact you. Cheers. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

I had opportunity to find out how our Japanese colleagues manage projects in our organization. And the result is that Mark is right that their planning is excellent. This is partly to do with their culture where they need to be very certain on things prior to committing themselve. Hence very detail planning. Down side is as a foreigner you may feel that there is not much progress till the Planning phase is completed.

They also constantly seek approval from their managemnet prior to progressing any further which very much tie in to the project approval phases.

Hopes the above help though this response is a bit late...
