LONER TEAM MEMBER: HOW TO DEAL WITH HIM?

A senior engineer who holds a two masters dedrees has been assigned to my product development project. He's very competent and has worked well as a loner for the past 20 years. I would like to make sure however that he works as a team member in this project. My questions are as follows:

1. How can I make hime work as a team member, not as a loner?

2. If he persists in wanting to be a loner, should I fire him?
