David, I think you are getting some good feedback here. To add my two cents, the relationships will make or break most projects, especially in matrix style organizations. If you are relying on technology to run the project without getting to know the participants and build the relationships so that they trust you, then your project will always be placed behind the ones run by people they know and like.
In fact, I very often try to take team members out to lunch, just to learn more about them. Birthdays, anniversaries, upcoming vacations, projects, kid's sports activities, these are all gold to build lasting relationships and show that you care about your team and the things that are important to them as well.
Some may argue that it is manipulative, but I think it's good leadership. Show that you care, maintain strong relationships and people will be more willing to work with you and help the team reach the identified goals.
Absolutely Matthew. You are 100% people oriented manager. That's the key to every project success. Taking care of people is not manipulative just as we take care of our kids, family, neighbourhood, country, … If so, I would ask, why we do what we do? The answer is we do what we do for ourselves first and secondly for people. So if taking care of people could make some people feel kind of manipulative, the first being manipulated would be ourselves. Does it has sense? I agree with Andrew and Sergio. I'll also add that good professional and project relationships are even more important due to the advent of technology, which some people use as a substitute for establishing meaningful relationships (look at how many people establish networks just by clicking a button, yet never exchange a word with the members of their network).

Every single week, I have different opportunities to contact with people from all over the World thanks to how easy is to communicate. Technology is crucial in that sense. However technology has erected an authentic wall that will take time to tear down or better to adapt our behaviour and get the most of it. Technology doesn’t have to be the end but just a great tool. Project management is 80% of art and 20% of science (where science means methods, techniques, process). On the other side, projects are started to put strategy on action. Strategy is the way an organization answer the external stimulus. Strategy determines the organizational architecture. And architecture is defined as organizational components and relationship (take a look to Tom Peter´s Seven S model). All these stuff because the Theory of Systems appllied to organizations.
