PMP necessary in the IT World?

I have been a project manager for over three years and have been successful in delivering large scale web applications to Fortune 500 type clients in a small entrepreneurial company that has no formal project management career path. I have no formal project management training or PMP and have applied more agile/extreme than traditional management techniques. I have decided to find a job in a company which has adopted project management as a discipline and career path. Should I attempt to get my PMP before my search or will experience get me in the door?

Have to agree with the others. As a PM, I hold almost 20 technical and/or Sales certs with our partners, mostly sales however. It helps you follow what's going on, and earns respect from the engineers.here is another good trick, companies recieve Reseller status, discounts etc. through certs. Many times they are pushing for certain goals, if you get certs in those drives, even if they don't count you look good to management, and if they are valid, it helps protect you from lay ofss and cutbacks.

Clearly if you wanted the credential bad enough (and earned it), PMP demonstrates understanding of sound PM practices according to the de facto authority (in the US) PMI. <> But what about the newer designation "CPM" which stands for Certified Project Manager? It's offered by Int'l Assn of Proj & Prog Mgmt (IAPPM.org). Is anyone familiar (or credentialed by them)? I'd appreciate knowing what folks say.

CPM, Certified Project Manager, sure has a better ring to it than PMP, but I don't think is it nearly as well known (or accepted) in the marketplace. I'd like to know which way to go (if either) since I'm more familiar with Prince2 frameworks. Can anyone help me out in the states?
