I am in the It industry for almost 8 years, mostly as a programmer. I am in US for almost 2 years now on a project, but still an employee of an Indian company. Recently, I decided to switch to project management and from whatever little experience I had, I passed the PMP exam in April.
I am planning to relocate to India and also switch my job, since my present employer has very little significance of my PMP certification. However, I am not sure if PMP is really in demand in India and whether it will fetch me a job of my preference. My PM experience is next to none, though i have worked as a team lead in project as well as support environments.
Does anyone here know is I can get a good manager-level position in India, based on my experience and my PMP certification? I am not sure of what IT companies in India look for in a project manager. Any information shared on this will be extremely helpful.

One thing we need to know is PMP methodology will workout efficiently when the projects are in one location. If you take any Indian companies, they have Offshore/Onsite model. In most of the situation, PMI methodology is tough to implement in this kind of model. I won't say that it cannot be implemented.
In today's world, the Indian companies are pushing for PMP certification for all the PMs. But, implementing the methodology will not work out. Possessing the PMP certification is really good one. Eventually, the Organization gets benefits out of PMP certification holders, but, not immediately. The reason why Indian organization is looking for PMPs is that atleast they will have a good knowledge on Project Management, not for implementing the PMI methodology in their organization.

You can definitely apply for PM position and you will be definitely seeen different.

Dear Anonymous, I agree with Sriram's excellent post. I would only add two thoughts for your consideration. First, in your own words you said that with whatever little experience you had that you took and passed the PMP certification. And this is exactly how most employers would view a PMP; it is a good credential and perhaps tie-breaker, but not something that would result in one candidate being immediately hired over another. Secondly, and more important, you are absolutely on the right track in that the issue is what IT companies in India need in a project manager, not professional credentials or experience elsewhere. My experiences working with Indian technology firms in Bangalore, Noida, and Hyderabad have left me with an impression that an impeccable track record of accomplishments, deep technical skills, excellent communication sklls, customer relationship management skills, and a high level of opportunistic entrepreneurial business savvy is what Indian executives look for in their managers. Good luck! -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International
