Hello Everyone! I am new to the community and recently made a decision to obtain a PMP certification. While I do see that there are in person, week long classroom training (that are too costly for me), I wanted to see if anyone had a reference for another option to obtain the 35 contact hours needed. There are some advertisements that offer PMP exam prep subscriptions for much cheaper ($180) but I'm just wary of paying for that and then finding out I still have to pay for a very expensive classroom training. Any advice for someone first starting out is graciously appreciated.

PMI certification is pretty specific about this requirement. The 35 hours are to be through an approved partner and have specific requirements. The advertisements you are referring to are just prep courses. They will only give you exam basics. The 4-5 day classes do this, but they also provide you with some basic insight into the questions, covers the main ideas, go over the math in detail, and give you essential study guides and practice exams. In addition to this, you have a peer group that is mixed, some have taken the test and not passed, some are new, some are experienced. It is an essential part of achieving the certification and really is unavoidable. Saving Changes...

There are online prep courses that will provide you with what you need and you'll get the PDU's required. Those are certified service providers.
Check the PM Network magazine, there are always advertisements there for online courses.

Even though the cost is somewhat large, I feel the benefits outweigh the costs when it comes to the classroom experience. I like the interaction and I personally need that extra drive. It would have been way more difficult for me to obtain my PMP without the class pushing me. Hope this helps!

Not true - this is what some training providers are trying to advertise. All you need is to prove you have 35 hours min. of "structured" project management training. It could be from your neighbor or friend

HI Mayte
I am not sure I understand your response. Do you mean we can offer the training? We do not operate in the USA

That's curious, I was in a rush and deleted the answer due to my poor explanation...now I see it here again.
This was my initial thought:
Thank you Mounir, sometimes people forget that if their own company has a training material, mentors or instructors for their employees, that cover the 35 PDU's they can apply for the certification. This courses as you noted should be perfectly structured and in the case of an audit, the applicant/organization should show all the material.

HI Mayte,
Clear. However, it is not only internal courses - literally, you can take the course from anyone --- REP or not --- Internal to your Company or not --- from a company or individual and the 35 hours count as long as it is structured learning.
Unfortunately, many claims that you must take the course from REP and this is not true. Saving Changes...
