PMI process question

I'm trying to figure out which PMI process updating the project schedule falls under vs. updating the project plan. What I mean by "updating the project schedule" is marking tasks as completed. What I mean by "updating the project plan" is adding to the information contained within the project plan.

Is it the "executing" process or the "controlling" process? Are both activities considered part of the same process?
