Hi Folks,

What is your definition of "Social Media"?

I have always thought of Social Media like a virtual cocktail party. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Snapchat and maybe even blogs and forums like this fit into my understanding of Social Media.

Recently I came across a REP (registered education provider) that claim that one-to-one video calls on Skype or Apple Facetime are Social Media. This education provider claims that this is in the line with some official PMI definition and that it is the only correct answer on PMI certification exams.

Is there an official PMI definition of Social Media?

What is your personal understanding of Social Media?

Thank you in advance to everyone who answers!

Your first thoughts and explaination is correct in my opinion. That is social media.
Skybe etc are social collaboration in my opinion. In this situation if you are a customer on a plattform you are using social media. If you are doing business over such a plattform (e.g. using skype for business in your Organization) you are working on a social collaboration plattform.

Well you know everybody got his own light on some aspects. Therefore, I guess both could be social media.

I have never saw an explained PMI definition on social media so far.

This website is an example of social media. Profiles, interactive content, collaboration etc. It doesn't have the communication platforms that say skype, and facebook have, but then neither does LinkedIn.

I am not sure I fully understand what you are trying to state.

I understand that you classify this website as Social Media (and I tend to agree with you).

Do you classify Skype one-to-one video calls as "Social Media"?

Skype one-to-one video calls is also classified as "Social Media" although it is not mentioned in the list below.

According to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media
"Some of the most popular social media websites are Baidu Tieba, Facebook (and its associated Facebook Messenger), Gab, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, Viber, WeChat, Weibo, WhatsApp, Wikia, and YouTube."

As per Wikipedia's definition: "Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks....."

I do not see how Skype one-to-one video calls match the Wikipedia definition you cite "... via virtual communities ...".

A phone conversation would qualify for social media! Now a day phone are computer. So mostly anything that is electronically transfer would qualify.

I am surprised why Skype is not included in the list. I also use WeChat. You can made one-on-video-calls with WeChat. Both are social media medium.
Whether Skype is a social media tool or not is something that is debatable to some.
Maybe it's about time that Skype will evolve to a social media network...

Hi Tom,
in the context of project management (team work) the term social media is in my understanding related to omni-channel communication and collaboration embedded in an overall transformation strategy for workplace digitization. I see it in teams where we have representatives of the generation born after 1990. They use different working and communication styles. In such respect the term social media does primarily focus on the PMI process groups communication and HR Management.
