Hi Folks,
What is your definition of "Social Media"?
I have always thought of Social Media like a virtual cocktail party. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Snapchat and maybe even blogs and forums like this fit into my understanding of Social Media.
Recently I came across a REP (registered education provider) that claim that one-to-one video calls on Skype or Apple Facetime are Social Media. This education provider claims that this is in the line with some official PMI definition and that it is the only correct answer on PMI certification exams.
Is there an official PMI definition of Social Media?
What is your personal understanding of Social Media?
Thank you in advance to everyone who answers! Saving Changes...
Social media is more kind of a virtual world for me!
There are very few connections whom you know personally, but are your friends and you create a virtual world with those online(virtual) friends. Saving Changes...

Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.
Based on this definition, I would say Skype, Twitter, LinkedIn are each a technology medium that allows you to "virtually" collaborate in real-time, making it part of the social media vertical. Saving Changes...
Skype one-to-one video calls is also classified as "Social Media" although it is not mentioned in the list below.
According to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media "Some of the most popular social media websites are Baidu Tieba, Facebook (and its associated Facebook Messenger), Gab, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, Viber, WeChat, Weibo, WhatsApp, Wikia, and YouTube."
As per Wikipedia's definition: "Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks....."

A phone conversation would qualify for social media! Now a day phone are computer. So mostly anything that is electronically transfer would qualify.

Yes, that was my reflection as well.
The problem I have with classifying Skype one-to-one video calls (and a phone conversation) as social media is how it fulfils the "... via virtual communities..." part of the Wikipedia definition.
Maybe the contact list / phone book in the phone and in Skype can be declared to be a "virtual community" ;-)

Your 'contacts list' would qualify as your own "personal" virtual community. You create your own virtual community.

Applying logic to this results in the conclusion Vincent already made: A phone call with an Android phone or iPhone is Social Media...

Tom,
This is an interesting question. If PMI has a specific definition for their exams, I hope someone finds it. However, I've found that some education providers spend an unjustifiable amount of effort on questions that will never appear on a PMI exam. I suspect this is an example of that, but I'm curious to see if anyone can find a PMI definition or if anyone has seen this question on an exam. Saving Changes...

I think the key factor in social media is the facilitation, not the technology. It's communication channels that help bridge or remove social obstacles such as geography, time zones, cultures and languages. Saving Changes...

This is a really thought-provoking question, Tom! I have always regarded social media as "sharing" apps like LinkedIn, FB, Twitter, etc...
After doing a very brief search in the PMI annals, I actually found something that supports the definition that you found from the REP. There is a white paper from 2015 titled, "How to Successfully Use Social Media on Your Projects." In this paper, the author describes social media in this way:
...Social media, defined as “the interaction among people in which they create, share, or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks” (Wikipedia, n.d.).
Having discovered that, I must say that I like your idea of the virtual cocktail party the best! Saving Changes...
