Complex question and it depends on what your definition of success is. You may achieve results but at what cost? If your team is sacrificed at the cost of results I would not think this is success.
Knowing when to lead and when to manage is a good start. Understanding the difference is vital.

You are correct, and that should all be taken into consideration. A leader who achieves an objective but destroys his team in the process has probably failed. In business, we might talk about a leader who produced a fancy new widget while driving his company into bankruptcy. The leader lost sight of the big picture and produced poor results.
This assumes we're not talking about WWII movies, where the objective might be more important than the team. Good leaders may have to make tough decisions and assume huge risks. Are there project management equivalents of this?

Agree on results and to me - results from a team who wants to give them. A leader is someone who inspires others to produce those results, to perform their best. Saving Changes...

"Nearly every great advance in science arises from a crisis in the old theory, through an endeavor to find a way out of the difficulties created. We must examine old ideas, old theories, although they belong to the past, for this is the only way to understand the importance of the new ones and the extent of their validity."
